You were filled with all kinds of excitement and zeal thinking that you would get out of school to demonstrate against “gun violence” and the “Gun Culture”. You have been told that guns are bad. That we need to reduce the number of guns in America to make America safer. You were shocked and rightfully so at the murder of 17 innocent students in Parkland Florida. So you decided that walking out of school would help stop these things from happening.
Then just the other day during your walk out some of you decided it was OK to rush into a WalMart and destroy and steal someone else’s property. Now like we adults tell you all the time, we shouldn’t judge all of you by the actions of a few right? Even though the few was more like 50-75 of you we will give you the “benefit of the doubt” and still consider most of you thinking, rational and intelligent (although you are in school and still learning about the world around you). Your walkout resulted in what?
In Florida, the State Legislators passed a law raising the age to buy a rifle or shotgun to 21. Now, this law is based on the action of one or two evil people, and the results penalize all 18-20-year-olds, tens of thousands of people. What you did resulted in a law that takes away your own rights! You do realize that right? That those most affected by this new restriction are you, the seniors and those just graduating high school. In essence, your actions resulted in your rights being taken away. Is that what you were aiming for?
Just this last week we had another student in Maryland bring a pistol into a school and shoot and kill a young lady and injured another. The murderer was engaged by a school resource officer and died as a result. But what is telling is that there is already a Federal Law prohibiting anyone under 21 from buying a handgun. Yes, somehow magically he was still able to get one and use it in a school to kill someone. So the Federal Law that prohibits the sale of handguns to anyone under 21, did nothing to stop this murder. Also, the laws against murder, taking a gun onto school property, and about a dozen other laws were also broken. None of them stopped the murderer from taking a firearm onto the school and committing evil with it.
But what did stop this from possibly becoming worse and more victims being killed? A good guy with a firearm. As I have said before and from many years of experience dealing with armed criminals, the only way to stop an armed criminal is to have an armed response. You don’t stop a shooting by yelling harsh words at the murderer. And hugs don’t work either. Once the shooting starts, the only way to stop it is to confront it and stop the threat using force. Just like what happened in Maryland.
So to you, the students who are part of the #marchforourlives group, what you basically accomplished is getting your own rights restricted even more, making some really uninformed statements about a topic you know very little about, and basically proving to the rest of the country that our school security needs a really good overhaul. What have you accomplished that will save one single life of your fellow students? Nothing.
Maybe you would be better off learning in school, learning about the topics you are trying to get involved in, and finishing school and going to college. Oh, and they have shootings at colleges also. And it is illegal to carry onto the campuses where those shootings happened also. So banning, outlawing, or otherwise restricting the tool used has done very little if anything to curb these types of murders.
And I bet you didn’t realize that school shootings have gone down drastically since the 1990’s right? You were told they have increased and become more commonplace, it’s an “epidemic’! Here is a test of your schooling, prove it. Show all of us how smart you really are. Show us where school shootings have gone up not down over say the last 25 or 30 years. You may be shocked to find out you have been lied to about much more than just that. You are being used by people to push an agenda, and you don’t even realize it.
Want to be safe in school? Let those teachers and staff who want to carry a concealed firearm carry one. Pretty simple, cost-effective and proven to be safe (they have it in many places around the country, look at the facts again). Strengthen the physical security measures at your school. If you don’t know what that means, Google it. But making laws that limit your own right to defend yourself and take away rights from others your age, well that is just plain stupid.
Take a look at the signs your fellow students made to demonstrate with. It speaks volumes about the thought process some of you are using.
